Mercedes-Benz Renntransporter Blue Wonder

After the Second world war, in 50-h years of the 20th century the company Mercedes has started to restore its racing reputation. At the time sports cars were worthy successors to the pre-war "silver arrows". Unusually well-received new car W194 “Gullwing” (Gullwing), designed by the genius Uhlenhaut Rudolf (Rudolf Uhlenhaut). Encouraged by the victories that were won by these cars on race tracks, the company decided that transport the race cars to the competition venue need not just on trucks or wagons and special transport. From that moment began the history of Mercedes-Benz Renntransporter, nicknamed the 'Blue wonder' (Blue Wonder).

The Department of design, at the request of the Manager of racing Neubauer Alfred (Alfred Neubauer), in 1954, was designed car, the only wishes in the creation of which was high speed and the ability to transport racing cars. As a result, Mercedes-Benz Renntransporter integrates elements of many serial cars and even sports models of the time - based on stretched platform from the coupe Mercedes-Benz w188 300S, but under the hood is located a 192-horsepower fuel-injected inline-six from the coupe Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing. We should give the guys in the Department of experimental development Mercedes-Benz – to the point they approached responsibly, extremely creative, and most importantly, without regard to the budget. The cabin is carried far forward, somewhere on the meter from the axis of the front wheels and cargo platform was designed with the expectation that shipped a race car almost "no peeking" at the top envelope, which was correct in the sense of aerodynamics and aesthetics.

It is a pity that Blue Wonder's career was disappointingly short. Its not a cargo grace it pleased the audience only two seasons 1954 and 1955.

After a terrible katostrofy at the marathon in Le Mans 1955, Mercedes withdrew from Motorsport, putting an end to all racing projects and the unique truck was left without a job. Some time the car served as a show car in the US, and then, for over 10 years was used for test-drives of Mercedes-Benz. In 1967 the car was cut into scrap by the decree of the head of the experimental shop of Rudolf Uhlenhaut.

In the early 1990s, two masters Tim Camisole and Martin Scott from the firm "Mika" agreed to undertake the restoration of the car. Because drawings do not exist, since the car was assembled from suitable components literally on the knee, the car had to recreate the photos. The concern Daimler-Benz provided the new motor with the gearbox model 300SL. The basis of the suspension was taken from the coupe's chassis Mercedes-Benz 300S that was used when creating the original. After the engine and chassis were assembled, Dirk Blossfeldt produced from the old Mercedes-Benz 180 cabin and sheets of tin only on the basis of photographs — wings. From the original departed in only one — instead of drum brakes were installed from a disk 300SL. The truck was re-established for eight years, after which he was transferred to the Mercedes Benz Museum.
