MBMC: Newsletter No 17 - December 2020

From Autocult: The "Book of the year", eagerly awaited every Christmas time, not only shows the entire annual production of Autocult, but also the history and all the technical details worth knowing of the original cars, and it is here now! A ‘must have’ for collectors who are interested in the background facts and information and in more than just a single brand.

This year, an interesting chapter in Autocult’s yearbook is dedicated the very influential Paul Bracq and his career, and reminds us of the unforgettable forever elegant and timeless car designs he created for Mercedes-Benz …

Another reason for excitement is Autocult's "Set of the Year". It consists not only of the book of the year, but also of a special 1/43rd scale model, which is not part of Autocult's annual program, and of which nobody outside the company has any previous knowledge whatsoever, until it is issued together with the yearbook, thus providing every time a pleasant surprise at Christmas time. This annual model is available only in conjunction with the yearbook, not separately (139.95 € + S&H).

This year's surprise model consists of the cutaway model of the Porsche 928 PSE, type 960, which is a 1:43 miniaturization of the original Porsche, which is now on display in the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart.

Autocult has once again done a great job here, and once more the company can only be congratulated for their unusual choice of model. The result, as compared to the original, is really convincing as well.

1:43 Miniatures of cutaway cars which were displayed at car shows are rather rare, and model car manufacturers rarely dare to tackle such projects. In fact, there is only one other company I  know of, Universal Hobbies from France, which successfully approached such a 1/43rd scale model (of the Renault 3 or 4 show cars at the 1961 ‘Salon de l′Automobile’ in Paris) a few years ago. The model is extremely difficult to find nowadays. As far as I know, there has never been a 1/43rd scale model of any Mercedes cutaway car, although I have seen a picture of a 170V one.

5 years Autocult: An anniversary that nearly passed unnoticed!

This year, Autocult celebrated its fifth anniversary, probably in a more subdued way than the Company may have planned, but unfortunately as we all know…Covid-19 came along and messed everything up!!

In any event, congratulations to Autocult for 5 years of fresh, innovative, outside the box thinking and great, accurate model making!

Let us look forward to many more years of continued production of 1:43 models of unusual and highly interesting cars by Autocult, and to their next milestone!
