During the energy crisis, Mercedes began experimenting with diesel engines to showcase the capabilities of diesel-powered vehicles, resulting in the 1976 C111-IID with a 3-liter inline five-cylinder diesel engine from the 300SD. The engine was slightly redesigned and equipped with a turbocharger, giving it 190 hp. The car had serial number 31. The diesel version of the C111 broke 13 records for diesel cars on the Nardo track.
